Halbleineneinband, A few words about the composer : Jules Van Nuffel was born at Hemiksem on 21st March, 1883. He was prepared for the priesthood at the Grand Seminary of Mechelen, where he also studied piano, violin, organ, harmony and counterpoint. Later he founded St. Rombouts' Choir, whose leader he was until 1949. This choir was one of the most famous in Belgium. Jules Van Nuffel was a self-taught composer who wrote hymns and motets from his earliest years. His favourite composers were Bach, Wagner and Debussy. Because of his admiration for religious music he dedicated his life to chants and choral work. He loved rich harmonies, chromaticism, modulation and enharmonic change. From 1918 until 1953 Jules Van Nuffel was principal of the Lemmens Institute at Mechelen (today at Leuven). Here he established courses for both composition and music education. He attached great importance to the quality of vocal training and choir leadership. Moreover it was he who opened the doors of the Lemmens institute to women and saw that its diplomas were officially accepted as equal to those of the royal conservatories. After a long illness Jules Van Nuffel died on 25th June, 1953 at Wilrijk. Title: The Vatican plain chant; a practical manual for teacher and student Publisher: New York, J.F. Wagner IMPRIMATUR: 1904 COPYRIGHT: 1904 TRANSLATION: Lemaistre (supposedly printed in 1906) ....EXCEPT FOR THE TITLE!!!! The one that is called "The Vatican plain chant: etc." says that it is a NEW AND REVISED EDITION. However, in this "new and revised edition" the Preface is missing. The Preface said (and I quote), "This method has nothing new to offer. It is based upon well-known Plain Chant hand-books by authorities such as DOM POTHIER, KEINLE, TINEL, WAGNER, HABERL, etc." Again, This Preface is NOT printed in the one called "The Vatican Plain chant; etc." but it WAS printed in other (which, again, has the same year of copyright and imprimatur). "This work, of such great scope, could not have been undertaken without the collaboration of skilled masters familiar with Gregorian melodies under the direction of a leader both long prepared for this task, and motivated by his ardent love of sacred music...

"We gladly bless the work that comes into being in our diocese, the Christian artists who have leant their gifted collaboration, and all those who will be inspired by the accompaniment of Gregorian chant."

J. E. Cardinal Van ROEY, Archdiocese of Malines

Kyrie XIV (Deus Creator) • re-written with my changes, made to match the Solesmes
rhythmic editions (but not necessarily their "ictus placement," or groupings).

The Nova Organi Harmonia (NOH) is perhaps best described in bullet format:

• 2,500 page collection of organ accompaniments for Gregorian chant, published in the 1940's.

NOH contains harmonizations for every single chant in the Liber Usualis (with the exception of a few hymns), as well as several entire psalms; in other words, the entire Graduale, Antiphonale, and Kyriale.

• NOH goes out of the way to be the most incredibly complete of all collections. For instance:

1) NOH includes harmonizations to every possible chant that could ever be sung on any feast or votive Mass offered at any time of the liturgical year. For example, it has an accompaniment for the Tract ("Ipse invocabit me") for the Feast of Christ the King, as well as the Lesser Alleluia ("Potestas ejus") and Greater Alleluia ("Habet in vestimento")

2) NOH includes harmonizations to up-to-date Feasts, as well as older ones; for example, it includes both versions of the Mass for the Assumption (i.e. "Gaudeamus" and "Signum Magnum")

3) The Kyriale includes all six versions of the Credo, as well as all the ad libitum chants

• NOH was composed by some of the greatest masters of Sacred Music of all time. These artists
were faculty members at the Mechliniensis Interdiocesan Institute Musicae Sacrae (now called the
Lemmens Institute of Leuven, in Belgium)
.* Numbered among these eminent men were such names as:

FLOR PEETERS • JULES van NUFFEL • MARINUS de JONG • JULES VYVERMAN

• These masters spared no effort in their great and tremendous endeavor. In the words of Peeters:

"Conscious of the enormous labor that a work of such scope would require, and knowing on what slippery terrain we would engage ourselves, we decided to postpone execution until, after careful consideration and much deliberation, we could formulate a precise and definite plan that would satisfy all of our collaborators..."

• It was published by the same Institution that had produced the Organum Comitans many years
earlier. The Organum Comitans was a famous collection of Gregorian organ accompaniments composed by Alph. Desmet, Aloys Desmet, and Oscar Depuydt.

• The accompaniments of NOH are absolutely superb by any standard. The professors invented an ingenious, unsurpassed, and wonderful method of translating the chant melodies into modern notation (incorporating, among other things, stemless noteheads and slurs over groups).

• To give you a small idea of their masterful methods, consider that they always reharmonize the
repeating verses of hymns. They even do this for different hymns with the same melodies (so, for example, there are over twelve different harmonizations to the melody of the Blessed Virgin, whereas all other published works would have only one harmonization). They also reharmonize every single Gloria Patri for every single Introit, in order to provide variety and (more importantly) to match the Gloria Patri harmonization perfectly with the rest of the Introit.

• The only real drawback to using the NOH is that they are based on the interpretation of the "pure" Vatican chant edition (Editio Vaticana) rather than the Solesmes edition. In today's world, where the Solesmes editions have taken over 90% of all parishes and seminaries where chant is sung, one may ask why Belgian musicians of the 1940's would have based their work on the Vaticana. However, it must be realized that not until the 1950's were the Solesmes editions (with their "dots and dashes," invented in the 20th century by Dom Mocquereau) officially accepted by the Church (with a declaration by the Sacred Congregation of Rites). That is to say, until that time, the Church had only "tolerated" the use of Solesmes' rhythmic theories under certain conditions. Needless to say, there is no difference in the NOTES of the NOH and the Solesmes versions (since they are both based on the Editio Vaticana), but the rhythmic markings are completely absent in the NOH. It is certainly not a difficult problem to overcome for those musicians who prefer the Solesmes rhythmic markings to the "pure Vaticana".

• Unfortunately, the eight volumes of the NOH are not currently available for puchase in this country (not even in Europe). However, I was fortunate enough to obtain copies of the edition from a retired musicologist. I would be happy to provide any information (contact me at jeff@ostrowski.cc), and I also plan on posting many more samples of the NOH online. I have seven out of the eight NOH volumes: the only volume I'm missing is the one containing special Propers for certain dioceses in Belgium.

• There is an interesting story about the creation of the NOH. I am told that Msgr. Jules Van Nuffel (running the college in the 1940's) was very nervous that his faculty would be drafted to fight in the Second World War, because they had nothing to do all day. Now, they had nothing to do all day because they had very few students (since all the students were off fighting in the war). Therefore, to keep them from being idle (lest they were drafted on account of their idleness) Van Nuffel came to the faculty and said, "Friends, we will now harmonize the entire Vaticana Graduale." And that is how the NOH was created.

• Below are a few samples of the NOH, all taken from CD productions of Jeff Ostrowski.

* The name of this Institution is rather complicated. Basically, it used to be called the Malines Institute
of Sacred Music, but was changed to the Lemmens Institute of Malines (or Mechelen) in memory of its legendary
founder. It is now called the Lemmens Institute of Leuven.
