O Sacred Head Surrounded • Hymn (Passiontide)
Words attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153)

Arrangement— Jeff Ostrowski, after Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

.O Sacred head surrounded by crown of piercing thorn!
O bleeding head so wounded, reviled and put to scorn.
Death's pallid hue comes o'er thee, the glow of life decays;
Yet angel choirs adore Thee, and tremble as they gaze.
We see Thy strength and vigor, decreasing in the strife;
And death with cruel rigor, depriving Thee of life.
Lord by this bitter passion, God's Justice satisfied,
A holy people fashion, redeemed and sanctified.
O Jesus we adore Thee, our thorncrowned Lord and King.
We bow our hearts before Thee, and to Thy Cross we cling.
O give us strength to bear it, with patience and with love,
That we may truly merit a glorious crown above.
